Collingwood Magpies vs Geelong Cats
Stadium :MCG Stadium, Melbourne
Date : Saturday 18 may 2013
Time : 19:40 (AEDT)
HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 224, Collingwood 128, Geelong 95, Drawn 1.
LAST TIME: Collingwood 17.8 (110) def Geelong 10.19 (79), Round 16, 2012 at the MCG

WALKING WOUNDED: The Magpies will finally welcome back Luke Ball after over a year out with a knee injury but that news was tempered by confirmation that Dale Thomas will miss the next two matches after his troublesome right ankle flared up again and promising youngster Alex Fasolo is set to miss the rest of the season with a fractured navicular bone in his foot. Collingwood will also have to make to do without dashing defender Heath Shaw who is suspended while reigning best-and-fairest Dayne Beams (quad) is still at least a fortnight away, Tyson Goldsack (hip) is expected to sit out this week’s clash at a minimum, Alan Toovey has been ruled out for the year as well with a knee injury and former Hawk Clint Young (hamstring) isn’t expected to be available until Round 10 at the earliest. In some better news, Marty Clarke should be okay after suffering a corked thigh against Fremantle last week.

Star Geelong midfielder James Kelly will sit out the next two matches after unsuccessfully challenging his rough conduct charge against Essendon utility Brendon Goddard, while veteran Paul Chapman has been ruled out yet again due to his hamstring taking more time than expected to heal sufficiently. Taylor Hunt will miss 4-6 weeks due to a fractured his collarbone sustained against the Bombers, Travis Varcoe (shoulder) is still a few months away from full fitness while Jared Rivers, Daniel Menzel and Hamish McIntosh are all unavailable due to knee injuries.

FORM: The Magpies appear to have lost their mojo in recent weeks. They were blown off the park on Anzac Day by a rampant Essendon outfit and last week were overrun by a decimated Fremantle team that was missing Matthew Pavlich, Aaron Sandilands, Nat Fyfe, Stephen Hill and Kepler Bradley while Jon Griffin went down with a serious knee injury during the match. The most worrying aspect of both losses was the fact Collingwood were right in the contest at the start of the final quarter but on each occasion appeared to give up which is very unlike the Collingwood teams we have come to know in the last five years. Their ability to defend has also come under serious scrutiny. The Magpies earned a win over St Kilda in between those two losses, but even then they didn’t kick clear of the lowly Saints until midway through the third quarter. Steele Sidebottom was Collingwood’s best player last week with 33 possessions (16 contested), seven clearances and a goal.

There isn’t a team in the competition travelling better than the mighty Cats at the moment. Geelong are purring (pun intended) right now as the only remaining undefeated team in the AFL. Chris Scott’s men have a perfect seven wins from seven matches and they made a statement in their last match when they defeated previous holders of top spot Essendon by five goals. As usual, Geelong gave their opponent a 3-4 goal head start in the first half and then came charging over the top of the Bombers like a freight train with 11 of 12 goals at one stage to put the contest to bed. Steve Johnson was outstanding with 36 touches and six inside-50s in a performance which continued his stellar start to the season. The mercurial Cat has relished spending more time in the midfield, averaging 29 touches a match to date.

Sydney Swans vs Fremantle Dockers
Stadium :SCG Stadium, Sydney
Date : Saturday 18 may 2013
Time : 19:40 (AEDT)
HEAD TO HEAD: Played 25: Sydney 14, Fremantle 11
LAST TIME: Sydney 14.10 (94) def Fremantle 12.9 (81), SCG, Round 2 2012

WALKING WOUNDED: Shane Mumford continues to race the clock, but probably won’t be risked against the Dockers’ decimated ruck stocks. Jed Lamb and Tony Armstrong are on the chopping block with Andrejs Everitt and Mitch Morton itching to take their spot.

Although coach Ross Lyon previously said Zac Clarke wouldn’t be considered this week, it appears he’s had a change of heart, sort of like the time he decided to ditch St Kilda. At any rate, the club tweeted that Clarke would be playing this week after all, coming in for the unfortunate Jon Griffin, who suffered a serious knee injury last week, just when he was in career-best form. Nat Fyfe will also return from suspension in a welcome boost to the club’s midfield but Stephen Hill is still two weeks from resuming with his quad injury.

FORM: Sydney fell back down to earth on the weekend after suffering a poor loss to Hawthorn last Saturday night. Right from the outset the Hawks looks on as they sought to avenge their 2012 Grand Final loss to the Swans, kicking the first five goals to almost immediately lead by 28 before effectively phoning it in for the rest of the game as they won by 37 points.

Where Sydney faltered in one of their big tests so far in 2013, the Dockers were the big achievers. Known as the Shockers in certain circles of the AFL world, Fremantle fought tooth and nail for their 27-point win over Collingwood despite losing Griffin to a serious injury early in the match. Leading by 44 points, Freo lost control of the game as Collingwood challenged in the third quarter and even re-took the lead. But against the odds, Fremantle wrested back the momentum through another star performance from little man Michael Walters to produce a top-notch victory over the struggling Magpies.

Time : 16:40 (AEDT)
HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 3, Gold Coast 0, Western Bulldogs 3, Draws 0
LAST TIME: Western Bulldogs 9.18 (72) def Gold Coast 4.10 (34) at Marrara Oval, Round 8 2012

WALKING WOUNDED: The Suns may lose former Lion Jared Brennan and former Hawk Tom Murphy for one week with concussion, but are hopeful of regaining big man Charlie Dixon from his ankle problem. Nathan Bock (leg) and Matthew Warnock (arm) are out indefinitely, while Seb Tape (knee) and Maverick Weller (shoulder) are still at least a week away from resuming. Western Bulldogs forward Shaun Higgins (foot) is gone for the season, while Easton Wood (hamstring), Tory Dickson (ankle) and Ayce Cordy (stress fractures) are a month away from returning. Dylan Addison (hamstring) will be tested closer to game time to see if he makes the trip.

FORM: The Suns form has actually been pretty good, with their 10-goal thrashing of Melbourne last start helping them improve to 3-4 for the season. The Dogs have won just once in 2013 and that was way back in Round 1 at home against the Brisbane Lions. Since then the Dogs have lost six straight, with their most recent performance a 54-point loss to North Melbourne.

Hawthorn Hawks vs GWS Giants
Stadium :Aurora Stadium, Tasmania
Date : Saturday 18 may 2013
Time : 14:10 (AEDT)
HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 1; Hawthorn 1, GWS 0
LAST TIME: Hawthorn 28.25 (193) defeated GWS 4.7 (31) at the MCG, Round 15, 2012

WALKING WOUNDED: The Hawks may get back Brent Guerra (knee) for their trip south, in what may be their only forced change for the clash. Cyril Rioli (hamstring – indefinite), Xavier Ellis (calf – one week), Brendan Whitecross, Ryan Schoenmakers, Matt Suckling and Alex Woodward (all knee – season) remain sidelined.

Giants ruckman Dean Brogan was substituted out of their loss to Adelaide on Sunday with a lower back issue, an issue that may see him miss the Hawks date. Fellow experienced cattle Chard Cornes (shoulder – indefinite) and Phil Davis (back – five weeks) remain out of action, while Kristian Jaksch (knee), Jonathan O’Rourke (jaw), Jonathan Patton (knee), James Stewart (back) and Dom Tyson (knee) are all missing. Andrew Phillips (hamstring) could return at the weekend, while Sam Schulz (virus) must pass a fitness test if he is to be selected.

FORM: The Hawks are sitting pretty with a 6-1 record after taking on all other finalists from 2012 in the opening seven rounds. They were quite impressive in getting a slice of revenge on the side that beat them in last year’s grand final – Sydney – at their last start, and have most of their stars firing at full pace.

The Giants copped a shellacking at the hands of Adelaide last time out – with their inadequacy of handling big talls exacerbated by Crows forward Tom Lynch booting 10 goals in less than two quarters during the game. Prior to that, they were gallant losers to Essendon at Etihad Stadium, so their formline is hard to read.

Essendon Bombers vs Brisbane Lions
Stadium :Etihad Stadium, Melbourne
Date : Saturday 18 may 2013
Time : 13:45 (AEDT)
HEAD TO HEAD: Played: 23; Essendon 11, Brisbane Lions 11, Draw 1
LAST TIME: Essendon 19.15 (129) def Brisbane 9.8 (62) at Etihad Stadium, Round 6 2012

WALKING WOUNDED: Alwyn Davey was the Bombers’ only casualty from last week’s loss to Geelong with the small forward set to miss 2-3 weeks with a hamstring problem. Brent Stanton (groin) and Courtenay Dempsey (ankle) both missed last week and will face fitness tests this week. Other than that it’s all smooth sailing for Essendon.

Brisbane could be boosted by the return of Matt Maguire, who will face a test on his injured ankle. Brent Staker is another likely to come under consideration with the former Eagle on the comeback trail following his knee reconstruction. Daniel Rich is still five weeks away, while Jared Polec and Stef Martin won’t be seen for a month. Clay Beams has already turned his attentions to next year following his knee reconstruction.

FORM: Essendon suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of Geelong last Friday night. The match failed to live up to the hype with the Bombers kicking themselves out of it with a disastrous 1.9 in the third term. Before that Essendon had posted six consecutive victories with their most impressive being interstate triumphs in Adelaide and Fremantle as well as their ANZAC Day belting of Collingwood.

Brisbane slumped to their fifth loss of the season last week against West Coast at home. While the final margin blew out to 26 points, the match was a lot closer with little more than a goal separating the two sides for much of the contest. The performance was significantly better than the week before when they were belted by Sydney, but they still have just two wins for the year. Those came against the dismal Demons and Gold Coast.
